A new Blackpool gym will have equipment to rival any facility in the north, it was today claimed.
Coun Graham Cain said the equipment being installed at the Gateway Fitness Centre, at a cost of £150,000, is top of the range.
He spoke at a meeting of Blackpool Council’s executive, where it was agreed to purchase rather than lease the equipment by borrowing the money – a move he said would save £7,500 over the next five years.
Coun Cain said: “The equipment we are installing is state of the art.
“There is nowhere in the north of England that has got this equipment in place.
“Everyone in the gym industry will be looking towards what we’ve done – I believe there is nothing north of Stoke that has got this equipment.”
The gym, at Bickerstaffe House which is part of the £220m Talbot Gateway development, was approved by the council last year.
It was originally agreed to lease the equipment at a cost of £35,000 a year.
The gym is part of a major development which includes office space, a new supermarket and a two-storey car park.
