Resort's donkeys trot through MoTs

HEALTHY hooves, check....twitching ears...check!

Blackpool's donkeys came under the close scrutiny of health inspectors for their annual MoT.

More than 90 of the four-legged animals trotted around Sands Way in the rain while vets checked their every movement to make sure they were ready for the summer season.

The health inspection was carried out by Blackpool Council and Donkey Sanctuary staff at Rigby Road, with dozens of owners bringing their donkeys out for a check-up.

Andrew Trawford, director of veterinary services for The Donkey Sanctuary, said the animals were in good health despite a harsh winter.

He added: "Many of the donkeys have been clipped which is to be expected with the summer season upon us.

"On the whole, I am pleased with the level of health of the animals. They have a tough season ahead and we have to make sure they are ready for their duties.

"They work very hard and some of the owners send them away for the winter so it is important they are good condition."

Last week the resort's landaus were given their annual service in time for the summer season and like them, all the donkeys came through with flying colours.

In total, 200 horses and donkeys have gone through a check – with vets saying Blackpool's are among the best in the country.

Under the Riding Establishment Act no donkeys under the age of four are allowed to carry passengers and they are not allowed to carry children who weigh more than eight stone.

Michael Fielding, council vet, said: "Blackpool's donkeys are amongst the best in the country and we are pleased with the level of health.

"They don't like rain very much but they have coped well and they have a long season ahead of them but they look to be in fine fettle."

Donkey owner Karen Richardson, who brought 10 of her animals down for their annual check, added: "They have all passed which is good news.

"I am very pleased with the checks and they are all well."
