Residents see red over bin changes
RECYCLERS have been shown the "red card" after a messy start to Fylde's new waste collection system.
Town hall bosses are now trying to clean up after being hit with hundreds of calls from unhappy householders who returned home to find they had been red carded by rubbish collection teams who refused to collect their green bins.
Changes to what can be put into the bins which take garden waste, means cardboard must now be placed in separate white bags to be collected.
Vegetable peelings, which people have been putting in the green bin for some time – despite not being supposed to – are also outlawed.
The changes have been brought in because the town hall is now using a new waste processing centre in Thornton.
Many residents – who claim they were not properly informed about the change – have contacted The Gazette to express their anger at being slapped with the "contaminated" red stickers.
Paul Hartley, from Bentley Drive in Kirkham, said at least four houses on his street had been affected. It seems like bureaucracy gone made," he said.
"They seem to be making it more and more difficult to recycle and my worry is people just won't bother."
Neil Tattersall, from Poplar Drive, Kirkham, experienced similar problems and added: "When complaints are made to Fylde Council it is never their fault."
Council director for the service, Allan Oldfield, took the unprecedented step of posting a comment on The Gazette website to provide help.
He apologised for any inconvenience and said it was inevitable, when dealing with changes for more than 35,000 homes, there would be teething problems.
Mr Oldfield said: "From Monday April 5 cardboard can no longer be collected in the green bins.
"Residents have been advised of these changes via an information leaflet and sticker on the green bins, press releases, roadshows, posters, signage boards on the vehicles and also information on the council's website."
