Pub fined over health and safety breach
A ST ANNES pub has been ordered to pay more than £8,000 after breaching health and safety regulations.
A problem with the boiler at The Admiral pub on St Annes Road West left the pub with no hot water.
It meant there was no hot water for the washbasins in customer and staff toilets.
Washbasins in the kitchen area were also affected so there was no hot running water for cleaning utensils and equipment.
Presiding magistrate, Michael Leigh, sitting at Blackpool magistrates court said: "We found these offences appalling and it went on over a length of time, affecting unsuspecting members of the public."
The Punch Pub Company Limited, based Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire, pleaded guilty to two offences of breaching food hygiene regulations.
The company was fined 8,000 and ordered to pay 750 costs plus the 15 victims' surcharge.
Ian Curtis, prosecuting for Fylde Borough Council, said an environmental health officer carried out an inspection at The Admiral on March 4.
The company had previous convictions for breaching food hygiene rules.
Defence solicitors for Punch said at the end of 2008 the pub was closed for refurbishment.
When the pub reopened there was a problem with the boiler.
A plumber called in said the boiler pilot light had gone out.
During the alterations a new extractor system was installed, which was subsequently found to extinguish the pilot light on the boiler.
The company, which employed more than 16,000 people and had a multi-million pound budget for maintenance, had installed a new boiler, in a place it could not be affected by the extractor fan, on March 12.
