Proposals for new flats are rejected

PROPOSALS to demolish a derelict hotel and replace it with apartments have been thrown out by planners for the second time.

LPS Ltd had applied to the council for permission to demolish the former Verona Hotel on Tyldesley Road and replace it with 15 self-contained apartments.

The hotel is boarded up and has not been used for five years.

But the scheme was thrown out because the council is pursuing a wider redevelopment of that part of the resort and believe individual projects would compromise that aim.

Planners have produced the Foxhall Area Action Plan, which is a strategic vision for the future of the whole neighbourhood.

The council is hoping to secure 35m of Government cash, which would be used to demolish failing guesthouses in a wide area to make way for up to 400 high quality new homes.

A previous application by LPS for the Verona, for 20 self-contained apartments, was thrown out in July for the same reasons.
