Prom hotel hit by virus

AROUND 30 people have been struck down with a vomiting virus at a Blackpool hotel.

Environmental health experts have confirmed the outbreak of the illness at The Cliffs Hotel, on North Promenade, is the contagious infection the Norovirus.

The bug, which normally lasts about 48 hours and can cause bouts of nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea, is easily spread in confined spaces such as hotels, cruise ships and hospital.

A Blackpool Council spokesperson confirmed tests showed it was Norovirus.

She said: "Before the weekend, we were aware of approximately 20 to 30 guests, of mixed ages, who displayed symptoms of the airborne virus, and they were advised to maintain very good personal hygiene and remain in their rooms if possible until better.

"We've also been in touch with the hotel to provide l support and advice on how to best manage the virus."

Robert Nelder, director of The Cliffs, said the outbreak was not severe and the hotel had taken action quickly.

He said: "Environmental Health came and took samples. It's not something you want to happen, but it can occur and we have done everything we can. We have taken all the right steps and think we have cleared it now."
