Prisoner found hanging dies
A BLACKPOOL woman has died after she was found hanged in her prison cell.
Lisa Marley, 32, of Lostock Gardens, South Shore, was found unconscious by staff at HM Prison Styal, Cheshire, on Saturday.
She was taken to Wythenshawe Hospital in Manchester where it was revealed she suffered a "catastrophic brain injury" and was not expected to survive.
A spokeswoman for University Hospital of South Manchester NHS Foundation Trust at Wythenshawe, today confirmed: "Sadly, Lisa Marley passed away on Wednesday afternoon with her family present."
Pauline Campbell, who has campaigned for better custodial care in women's prisons following the death of her own daughter Sarah at Styal, said: "I'm shocked and saddened to learn another woman has died in the care of Styal Prison.
"Lisa Marley is the sixth woman to die there since the death of my daughter Sarah in 2003. This again raises serious questions about the custodial care record of the prison."
Ms Marley's had been due to appear before Blackpool magistrates on Tuesday to face four assault charges and one accusation of racially aggravated disorder.
She is the second woman within a year from the Fylde coast to have died at HMP Styal
In May last year, Helen Cole, 48, of Belvedere Road, Thornton, was found hanged in her cell while held on suspicion of murdering her teenage son Andrew.
She had been at the women's jail just 48 hours when it is believed she took her own life. Mrs Cole was not on suicide watch when she died.
