Popular Blackpool restaurant closes

ONE of Blackpool's biggest fast-food restaurants has closed with the loss of 29 jobs.

Bosses at Burger King decided to shut its Church Street outlet as part of a review of all its UK sites.

The restaurant chain is remaining tight-lipped as to the exact reasons behind the closure.

However, bosses today told The Gazette they plan to look at other sites in the resort and may return to the town centre at a later date.

An estimated five million burgers have been sold at the Church Street restaurant since it opened in January 1989.

The town centre outlet – where staff recently celebrated its 20th anniversary – has now been stripped of its signage.

A spokesman said: "Burger King can confirm the restaurant in Blackpool has closed.

"We continuously review our restaurant portfolio and make strategic decisions based on many factors including development opportunities, market conditions, restaurant profitability, lease length and overall brand presence. We are reviewing other premises in the area, to identify opportunities for future Burger King restaurants.

"Twenty-nine people worked at the Church Street restaurant but none have been made redundant," the spokesman added. "They will all be redeployed to the new outlet which will open in Blackpool once a location has been decided."

Blackpool has another Burger King outlet, at the Pleasure Beach.

Town centre boss Lee Paddock said the loss was a blow. "This is another store which will now be empty, but we are hopeful such a large space will attract another investor."
