Pool chairman offers to buy club

SOCCER boss Karl Oyston says he has put in a very generous offer to buy an under-threat Blackpool social club.

The Gazette revealed earlier this week how the Number One Club and the Central Bowling Club – who have joined together at the bowling club premises – fear they may be forced to close.

They say a deal was in place to sell the Number One building and use the proceeds to pay off both clubs' debts, which run to more than 200,000.

But the deal is now on the verge of collapse after the man who wanted to buy the Number One site – former Paris Casino owner Pierre Coulon – hit trouble with Blackpool Council's planning department.

Planners have recommended that planning permission for a casino is rejected because the council wants to bring a casino to the town centre and possibly the Winter Gardens, scuppering his plans for a new venue.

Now Mr Oyston, Blackpool FC's chairman, says he has offered the clubs, both based on Bloomfield Road, a generous offer for the Number One site which they rejected.

He claims he also offered to relocate the club inside Blackpool FC's new South Stand. But despite his initial offer being rejected, he

insists it remains on the table.

"We made an offer to them some time ago in excess of what they need to stay afloat," he said.

"We had offered to buy the Number One club and incorporate a new club premises within the new South Stand.

"They didn't want to accept it and I respect that.

"What I don't want people and councillors to think is that they have no alternative, but to grant planning permission for a casino.

"It was made clear to us that it is outside the council's policy and we had the door closed in our faces when we discussed putting a casino in the South Stand."
