PM defends post office closures
GORDON Brown has spoken out in defence of the nationwide post office closure programme.
The Prime Minister said in parliament today that the government had to: "take action," and claimed more than 800 post offices in the country had an average of only 16 customers a week.
He was speaking out after the Conservatives called a vote in parliment asking MP's to condemn the closures which have seen 12 Fylde Coast branches come under threat.
And Tories are now piling on the pressure calling a vote asking MP's to condemn the closures, which could see many Labour MP's forced to vote against the government
But in the face of the criticism Mr Brown defend the closure programme and said: "There are 800 post offices where on average 16 people attend these post offices a week. We've got to take action."
He also said the Conservatives had failed to put an alternative strategy put forward.
"Unfunded promises are empty and hollow promises to the people of this country,'' he told MPs.
"We have put aside 1.7 billion for the Post Office network.''
The Gazette's Stand up for Post Offices campaign drew a staggering 9,461 signatures opposing the closures.
The futures of 12 local branches remain in doubt following a six-week public consultation on their futures.
Postmasters are now waiting to hear from Royal Mail and an announcement is expected towards the end of the month.
