AFC Fylde secured their dramatic promotion to the Conference North by defeating Ashton United 4-3 in an enthralling penalty shoot out.

The game ended 1-1 after extra time, but the Warton crowd left Kellamergh Park ecstatic after seeing goalkeeper Ben Hinchliffe secure promotion via the play-offs.

The club, formerly Kirkham and Wesham, were in the bottom tier of the North West Counties League just seven seasons ago. Plans are now afoot for a new ground in Wesham close to the M55. Blackpool boxer Brian Rose (pictured) was among the fans at Saturday’s nailbiting game.

Jim Rutter, 64, of Gillow Road, Kirkham, said: “It’s a good result and it was a good game - it’s a shame someone had to lose.

“I used to play for the team when they were known as Wesham, and it’s great to see them doing so well.”

Mark Dugdale, 50, of The Conifers, Kirkham, added: “It’s a great result and much better than what I saw earlier at Blackpool.

“It’s great for the area and I hope they keep going and get their new ground.” Factory worker Paul Flannigan, 44, of Heron Way, Blackpool, said: “We’ve seen enough today to make us want to come back next season because it was good entertainment.”

Rita Battersby, 72, was watching the game with Neil Clarke, 57. Mrs Battersby added: “It’s brilliant and I’m so happy for Fylde.I hope we get our new ground to help us progress because they deserve that and it’s what the club needs.”
