No badger cull for Lancashire

LANCASHIRE'S badger population can rest a little more easily today after the Government abandoned plans for a country- wide culling programme.

The black and white animals have come under fire in recent years as scientists believe they can carry tuberculosis which infects herds of cattle.

The decision to abandon the cull comes following an independent study concluded it would not "meaningfully contribute" to controlling TB.

Lancashire Wildlife Trust (LWT) has welcomed the news saying scientific evidence suggests culling is not only expensive but could also lead to the spread of the disease.

Anne Selby, chief executive of the LWT, said: "We are relieved and delighted that the door is now open for positive measures to come in.

"We need to help in the efforts to reduce TB in cattle and we look forward to co-operating in our capacity as landowners and protectors of wildlife.

"There are measures in place in other countries which are proven to work and we look forward to seeing them coming into place without further delay."
