A STREET dubbed a “mini-Blackpool” could be set for another late-night bar.

Lytham nightspot Mojito –attached to popular restaurant Portofino – has applied for permission to serve drinks until 1am – a move which would make it the third bar in the area allowed to open past midnight.

If the cocktail and tapas bar gets its licence extension, it would be brought in line with fellow Henry Street establishment Henry’s and nearby Java.

Local residents have said there have been no issues on the street since Henry’s was granted its licence before Christmas – but there are concerns problems could be caused by a third bar.

Christine Irvine, manager of the Homestead – a complex for elderly residents on Henry Street – told The Gazette: “My goodness, on a Friday and Saturday night another premises will finish at 1am.

“I thought the police wanted to stagger leaving times but it seems to be 1am for everyone.

“It’s going to be a mini-Blackpool coming down Henry Street.

“My concern is what’s going to happen when they get a 1am licence – will they apply for a 2am licence?

“But I have to say Henry’s have adhered to their conditions and we never hear anything from them, they obviously control their customers coming out very well.”

Mojito is part of popular Italian restaurant Portofino and the late-licence would extend there as well.

Clifton Square bar Java recently had its licence reviewed by the council after reports of numerous police incidents over several years, but kept its late night permit.

And local Coun Len Davies said drinking establishments in the area were largely well-behaved.

He said: “I’ve had no complaints about the Mojito application.

“We don’t have any rule-breakers, they all police themselves very well.

“That road is becoming more and more a restaurant and bar area and most people seem to enjoy themselves down there.”

A date has yet to be set for the licence to be decided.
