HUNDREDS of council workers could soon be better off financially under new proposals.
Blackpool Council leader Simon Blackburn has announced his intention to introduce the so-called living wage for its employees.
In practical terms this means no-one working for the council would earn less than £7.45 an hour.
At present 528 council and school workers are earning less than this.
Coun Blackburn (right) said: “All across the town there are people that earn enough that they never qualify for benefits but also earn so little that they struggle on a daily basis.
“I want to encourage people to work and show that they will be rewarded
fairly for doing so.
“For people to work for the council and earn less than the basic cost of living just is not on.
“We have more than 200 employees currently earning less than £7.45 an hour who will immediately benefit from this change enabling them to have more money to spend in the local economy.”
The proposal will be heard at the council’s executive meeting on Wednesday December 12.
If agreed by the Executive the recommendations will be put to the full council in January.
