New £3.5m town square for Blackpool

WORK will begin before the end of the year on a new £3.5m square for Blackpool town centre after the ambitious scheme was given planning permission.

Blackpool Council's development control committee has approved the proposals for the St John's precinct in front of St John's Church.

Meanwhile, designers will sit down at a brain-storming meeting on Tuesday to discuss possible replacements for the 10-metre high metal steel sculpture which had been earmarked as the centrepiece of the project.

Soaring metal costs forced the council to scrap the sculpture last month.

Alternative suggestions have included a statue of a Blackpool personality such as legendary clown Charlie Caroli, or some kind of water feature.

Coun Maxine Callow, cabinet member for regeneration and tourism on Blackpool Council, said: "We are looking at all possibilities but we want something that will stand the test of time.

"We need something that is going to enhance the area and draw people in but we have to get it absolutely right because this is such a focal point and the church is such an attractive building.

"I think it will be wonderful when it's finished and people can sit out and enjoy the cafes in Cedar Square."

One element of the new Cedar Square will be the former Flagstaff Gardens fountain.

The 94-year-old water feature was dismantled to make way for the adventure golf which opened this year at the Pleasure Beach.

The new plaza will see a large area of pedestrianisation incorporating a section of Church Street, on to Abingdon Street and up to the Birley Street junction.

Urban regeneration specialists Leit Werk have designed the scheme which includes a cafe-style piazza, while the area in front of the church will be a hub for events and markets.

A report to planners said: "The space will form a function akin to a town square where events and markets can be held and where people can meet and relax within an attractive setting with pavement cafes adding to the character."
