Neighbours saved my life
A GRANDFATHER who was rescued from a blaze by his neighbours today said "I owe them my life".
Jack Kewley, a diabetic 82-year-old, collapsed at his St Annes home after his blood sugar levels plummeted as he was cooking his evening meal.
As he lay unconscious on the kitchen floor underneath the stove, Mr Kewley's brave neighbours, who had heard a faint beeping noise coming from his home on Berwick Road, smashed down the front door and resuscitated him while thick, black smoke filled the house.
Mr Kewley, a grandfather-of-three, said: "I'd collapsed and was out cold. I'd gone. If it wasn't for my neighbours, I'd be dead.
"They knocked the door down and broke it off the hinges to get in and called the emergency services.
I was making gammon, sausages, onion rings and had a fried egg ready for cooking. But I didn't get that far.
"I want to say thank you very much to them. It's a nice, friendly street and people look after each other."
The drama unfolded just before 7pm on Tuesday evening.
