Mystery figure at docks

THE literary mastermind behind Sherlock Holmes was convinced Fleetwood Docks had its own resident ghost.

Sit Arthur Conan Doyle wrote about the "spirit figure" featured in this photo in an article entitled 'Dark-room Mysteries' in a Sunday newspaper in 1928.

He was adamant the ghost was "valid".

Conan Doyle explained the photo – which had been 'touched up' by the newspaper to reveal the outline of the figure – was sent to him by a group of Fleetwood fish merchants who believed the figure was a young man who used to pack fish.

He stated the man who sent the photo said the ghost was well known by people in the port and the photograph "had caused a tremendous sensation".
