Motorway fly tipping warning
MOTORISTS are being warned by police to stop fly tipping on the motorway – or face severe penalties.
Officers have received a number of reports that rubbish was being dumped on the embankments next to the M6 at the M55 exit.
PC Geoff Thomas of Lancashire Police's motorway unit at Samlesbury, said: "I would warn all people not to do this as not only is it illegal, it could be extremely dangerous.
"The contents of some of the rubbish that has been tipped is extremely dangerous, especially if it enters the water system or is drunk by animals."
Anyone caught fly tipping could be fined up to 20,000 and serve six months in jail.
This could rise to five years imprisonment and an unlimited fine depending on the type of rubbish being dumped.
Improper use of the motorway hard shoulder is also an offence which can result in both a fine and points on the licence.
Police are urging anyone who sees rubbish being dumped to report the offence immediately.
