Miss England comes to Burnley

MISS England brought a touch of glamour to Burnley as she stopped by to help promote the prestigious national beauty pageant.

Hundreds of girls from the town will be hoping to follow in 22-year-old Katrina Hodge's footsteps when they turn out for regional heats at Turf Moor in May – a role Katrina is loving every minute of.

More commonly known as Lance Corporal Hodge when she's serving as a soldier in the Royal Anglian Regiment, Katrina traded in her fatigues for the diamond tiara in November when the original winner had to step down.

"I saw people advertising in my local area for the heat and just thought you know what I'm going to go for it. I didn't expect to get anywhere though. I just entered through the Miss England website and went from there. I got to go to the semi-final of the competition in Leicester before going to the final which was held in London. I came fourth the first year I did it which was in 2008. I re-entered because I enjoyed meeting all the girls, the fun of it, the charity work and again I didn't expect to come anywhere but managed to come second before being made Miss England because the previous Miss England had to step down."

The deadline for girls to enter the Burnley heat is Friday and Katrina is currently touring the country helping find beauty Queen hopefuls while offering advice.

"My advice to girls in Burnley is to just go for it. I never thought I would get anywhere in the competition and I did. I didn't know what to expect. I thought it was going to be a certain stereotype of girl in it but it wasn't. There were different girls from different walks of life. All the girls I met were intelligent, a lot of them are training to be doctors and lawyers. Really brainy girls all with their own reason for being there.

"I really would just say go for it, even if you think you haven't got what it takes you never know."
