Meningitis survivor backs campaign

A FYLDE coast woman who survived meningitis after 10 days in hospital is warning other local people to make sure they know the symptoms of the illness.

For Meningitis Awareness Week, which started today, Andrea Jenkinson, from Thornton wants to remind others how important it is to be aware of the disease.

Ms Jenkinson, 40, was left fighting for her life four years ago and knows that if she hadn't read up about the illness she may not have got help in time.

She realised just how serious her condition was because she had made herself aware of the signs and symptoms of meningitis in case her daughter Abigail, now eight, suffered from it.

She said: "Information from Meningitis Research Foundation helped me to diagnose myself when I had Group B meningococcal meningitis and septicaemia and I am convinced that helped saved my life.

"That's why I am supporting Meningitis Research Foundation's Meningitis Awareness Week."

Free B Aware symptoms packs are available through the Meningitis Foundation's helpline – 080 8800 3344 – or website – www.meningitis.org.
