Colin Foster fancies himself as something of a master quizman, so it’s no surprise he has made it through to the semi-finals of Mastermind.
Colin answered enough questions on his specialist subject – British summer Olympic medallists from the 1960s to 2008 – and in the general knowledge round to put him through to the next stages of the ultimate quiz show.
The 48-year-old, an accountant at Lytham-based Expert Accountancy Limited, is involved in a quiz league, and said appearing on the show would be a new challenge.
“I like to test myself,” he said.
“I’ve always been interested in the Olympics and have been watching them since 1972. I knew quite a lot about them anyway, have followed the games quite closely and I went to London last year to watch them. I thought I could probably do as well as the other contestants I’ve seen on the show.
“The filming was quite interesting, and I didn’t think too much about the cameras. I was just concentrating on the job in hand.”
Colin said 3,000 people applied to be a contestant on this series, and 90 were chosen to take part in the contest.
He answered 14 general knowledge questions correctly and got 12 right answers in his specialist field in the first round, which was aired on BBC2 in August. He will appear in the semi-final with 30 other people, aired over several weeks.
Colin said: “It’s exciting. I enjoyed doing it. I realise with certain quizzes you have to strike a balance between entertainment and quizzing. Mastermind is the elite one, but with the more mainstream quizzes you have to entertain a bit more.
“A lot of people have said they saw me on television, and tell me I didn’t disgrace myself, which is good.” Colin has taken part in quiz competitions in his home town of Warrington in the Warrington Quiz League. He said: “I’m quite competitive. I’d like to go on The Chase and Eggheads, and I’d also like to go on Who Wants To Be a Millionaire?”
The Mastermind semi-final will be aired next year.
The winner of the series is declared Mastermind and wins a cut-glass engraved bowl.
