Man rescued in sea drama

Lifeboat crews were joined by a helicopter from RAF Valley

Lifeboat crews were joined by a helicopter from RAF Valley

A MAN suffering from hypothermia was plucked to safety just before his yacht capsized off the coast of Lytham.

A dramatic search and rescue operation was launched on Friday evening after the Coastguard received a mayday call around 8.30pm.

Blackpool and Lytham lifeboats were sent to search for the man, who was discovered in his yacht on Salters Bank, south of St Annes.

The search and rescue helicopter from RAF Valley and Southport lifeboat were also called out.

Paul Parton, from the RNLI, said: “Crew members from Lytham lifeboat went aboard the yacht and took the man aboard the lifeboat and he is being taken ashore off Seafield Road near Lytham, where an ambulance is waiting.

“In the meantime, the yacht has capsized.

“It is a write-off but everyone is safe.”
