A man had to be taken to hospital after being pulled from the sea when he got into difficulty.

The 25-year-old was treated for secondary drowning, after swallowing a large amount of water, and taken to Blackpool Victoria Hospital.

Lytham Coastguard was called out to the incident, near St Chads Hotel, South Shore, by Blackpool Beach Patrol at 1.30pm on Monday.

The man had been pulled out of the water by his mother and mother-in-law by the time rescue teams arrived, but it is now known how he first got into difficulty.

A spokesman for Liverpool Coastguard said: “When the coastguard team got there he was already in the ambulance after being pulled out of the water by his relatives.”
