Major landmark set to be repaired

A MUCH-loved Blackpool landmark will definitely be repaired after it was damaged by high winds.

One of Marton Windmill's four 32ft sails was ripped off during March gales.

Blackpool Council's insurer's have now agreed to pay out for the cost of a new sail and investigations have begun to source the wood, which is likely to have to be shipped to Blackpool from Europe.

Coun Maxine Callow, cabinet member for regeneration and tourism, said: "Marton mill is a much-loved landmark and we're looking forward to having it back to its best as soon as possible.

"The insurers have assessed the damage and we can start looking at sourcing a replacement sail.

"Unfortunately this may take some time as it is likely the materials will have to be brought it from Europe. We want to ensure that the replacement is of good quality and lasts for years to come."

Time

Shirley Matthews, of the Friends of Marton Windmill, said she was pleased the process to replace the sail had begun.

She said: "We know it will take some time but at least we know the damaged sail is going to be replaced to restore the mill.

"We're hoping to open the windmill up once again to the public as part of heritage weekends on May 10 and 11.

"We'd also like to be able to show school groups round and to show children how important the mills were to society."

The windmill was given a 5,000 facelift last November when it was painted from top to bottom for the first time in many years.

Marton Mere Caravan Park agreed to sponsor the work by donating 3,000 to the cause – with the council adding an additional 2,000 to the pot.
