BY 'ECK Vera love, do you remember the Golden Mile?
TV's best-loved couple Jack and Vera Duckworth are set to reminisce about their breaks in Blackpool during their final scenes together after 28 years in Coronation Street.
Liz Dawn, 67, who has played loudmouth Vera on the street for 34 years, is leaving the soap due ill health.
Viewers will be able to see their final scenes together this winter.
Although they will not be filming in the town, Blackpool will form part of their emotional last script.
"Their trips to Blackpool are spoken about but we will not actually be filming in the resort," said a spokeswoman for the show.
"They have a grandson, called Tommy, who lives in Fleetwood, who they pop over to visit now and again.
"Although viewers won't actually see Jack and Vera in Blackpool, they have fond memories of their trips and reminisce about it," she added.
The couple's most famous visit to the resort came in 1994 when Vera embarked on an affair after renewing her friendship with Blackpool bingo caller Lester Fontayne.
Viewers watched on as the street's battleaxe took a steamy trip with Lester on the Tunnel of Love at the Pleasure beach.
But Jack won the day and the couple, who celebrated their Golden Wedding on the show in August, have continued their onscreen love hate relationship.
Blackpool tourism boss Mike Chadwick is pleased the couple will be remembering their strolls along the Golden Mile as the show comes to the end of an era.
He said: "We have been visited many times by Coronation Street over the years so it will be great to see them talking about their times in Blackpool.
"The show is still one of the most watched programmes on TV.
"Characters from Coronation Street have spent many happy holidays here and in reality cast have returned to switch on the Illuminations."
Many of the show's most dramatic storylines have been played out on Blackpool Promenade.
One die-hard fan even erected a memorial plaque after love cheat villain Alan Bradley was killed under the wheels of a Bispham tram while pursuing former lover Rita Fairclough outside the Strand Hotel on North Promenade in 1989.
Rita returned to the resort in 1994 with Kevin and Sally Webster for a holiday from hell, staying at a guest house run by a manic depressive hotelier.
Despite Vera's exit – which is set to be left open for a return – it is expected Jack, played by actor Bill Tarmey, 66, will continue nipping into the Rovers for a pint.
