A Lifeboat was launched to help a man who was swimming in the sea off Blackpool.

The Coastguard received a call from a concerned member of the public at 9.30am yesterday after a man was seen in the sea at South Shore.

Beach Patrol and members of Lytham Coastguard also assisted in the operation, although the man managed to return to the beach unaided.

It is believed the man, who is thought to be in his 20s, had been intoxicated at the time of the incident and had decided to go for a swim in the water close to Yates’s pub, on the Promenade.

A spokesman for Liverpool Coastguard said: “The Lifeboat and Coastguard team went to a guy swimming.

“He got himself back to shore but he was still a little bit intoxicated.

“He’d gone out far enough to get into difficulty but he got back OK.”
