Lennon "the pieman" gets Ticket To Ride

JOHN Lennon - in the shape of a giant pie - is back in lights in his hometown after being given a Ticket To Ride out of Blackpool.

Regulars at Lathom Hall, in Seaforth, Merseyside, were today greeted by the sight of a 10ft figure of the Beatles' legend.

Liverpool's Fab Four (or five as they were back then with Stuart Sutcliffe on bass and Pete Best on drums) played at the club 10 times between 1960 and 1961.

And so owner Brian Corrigan snapped up the lamp-post figures - part of the 2001 series commissioned by pie company Holland's - after spotting them in a sale of unwanted Blackpool Illuminations.

While all the talk at last month's sale was about the resort's mighty Thunderbird 3 rocket being sold off, Brian managed to find two Lennon Lights and put in an early bid.

Lennon - whose face is a giant moustachioed pie - is featured in full hippy garb under the banner Hi-Pie.

He said: "I saw there was a one-off sale of Blackpool Illuminations and I had pre-bought a couple of things, illuminated 'Love' and 'Fab' signs.

"But these John Lennon figures were not in the catalogue or on the internet. I spotted them at the back of a yard and was told they were available to buy.

"They would have been snapped up, but I went to Blackpool the day before the sale, so I was first in the queue when it opened and I got them.

"They are absolutely enormous and I was gobsmacked when I saw them."

One of the figures has already been installed outside Lathom Hall, and

Mr Corrigan hopes it will be illuminated sometime next week. The other will go inside the building with other Beatles and Sixties memorabilia.

The sale was revealed just days after never before seen Beatles pictures went on display in Blackpool.

A series of candid snaps were shot by an unknown photographer when The Beatles were recording an appearance at the ABC Theatre for television are part of the Showtown Exhibition. They are now on show in the Olympia Balcony of the Winter Gardens.
