Legal party drug blamed for Fylde death
A MOTHER has been told her daughter could have died after taking a 'legal' drug.
Stephanie Balcarras, 22, was found dead at her flat on North Promenade in St Annes, on October 17.
She had been staying with her sister, Laura Jane.
Miss Balcarras's mother, Teresa Kerrigan, was told she had taken GBL - a chemical found in household items like paint-stripper and known as "liquid ecstasy".
A post-mortem examination proved inconclusive and her family are now waiting for the results of a toxicology test.
GBL has a similar chemical structure to the date rape drug GHB and is thought to have caused around 20 deaths in the UK - including that of 21-year-old medical student Hester Stewart in Brighton in April.
Ms Kerrigan, from Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, said: "I want young people to be aware of the dangers of all drugs. We don't want another family to go through the heartbreak we did.
"The last thing I wanted to do was bury one of my kids."
Miss Balcarras's funeral was held yesterday at South Lanarkshire crematorium.
A 42-year-old man from Lytham St Annes was been arrested on suspicion of murder and possession of class A drugs and a 25-year-old woman from Lytham St Annes was arrested on suspicion of murder.
Both have been bailed pending further enquires, Lancashire police investigating the death said.
