Leader slams lapdance visit

BLACKPOOL Council leader and anti-sleaze campaigner Peter Callow has branded a fact-finding mission to a lapdance club by another local authority "outrageous".

Coun Callow, who has led the way in slashing the number of lapdancing venues in the resort, has condemned Cornwall Council's licensing committee after it was revealed members will be visiting strip clubs to see what goes on inside.

Cornwall Council has as yet refused to disclose how much money has been spent on the mission, but a similar exercise in Glasgow cost an estimated 7,000.

Cornish town hall bosses insist the cost will be made public after the event.

Coun Callow said he could understand the council's desire to take the issue of lapdancing venues seriously.

But he felt it would be better to follow Blackpool's lead and not spend tax payers' cash in "some sort of undercover night out".

But Coun Callow said: "We went round the lapdancing venues in Blackpool ourselves and it did not cost money.

"We went round with licensing officers – to other establishments as well – in one night, to inspect them and see what the script was.

"We were not there to look at any scantily dressed women, watch a show or have a knees-up. We had a job to do.

"That's the way to go about it and other councils should follow Blackpool's lead. Blackpool has been recognised as having the best enforcement team in the country.

"There is no need to spend tax payers' money on something like this. We have rights and powers to go about carrying out checks and finding out information."
