Labour’s promise to give local authorities more powers over transport, housing and employment has been welcomed in Blackpool.

Ed Miliband says if elected, his party would hand £20bn to councils to spend on skills, back-to-work schemes and infrastructure.

Local authorities would have to bid for cash and put private sector jobs first.

Blackpool South MP Gordon Marsden said: “People know locally what is best for their local labour market, especially in somewhere like Blackpool and the surrounding Fylde with its particular issues regarding seasonal working and skills.”

Sam Rushworth, Labour’s parliamentary candidate for Blackpool North and Cleveleys, said: “Although the South East is enjoying growth, unemployment in the North West continues to rise. Labour’s plans will boost local economic development and help us bring proper jobs to Blackpool.”
