Kirkham residents to have say

KIRKHAM residents are to have their say on the future of the town.

Fylde Borough Council is currently working on an detailed strategy for Kirkham and there will be public consultation on the document once it is completed.

The news will please the hundreds of Kirkham residents who signed up to The Express Kirkham Campaign petition calling for the council to pay more attention to the town.

The strategy is being devised after an action plan was drawn up by the Kirkham and Rural Fylde Partnership in 2004 as part of the Countryside Agency's Market Towns Initiative.

It identified more than 40 possible projects for Kirkham including improvements to the town centre and Memorial Gardens, a revamp of the station, promotion of Kirkham and Rural Fylde as tourist destinations, the creation of an events schedule for Kirkham and improvements to community facilities in the town.

The document currently being worked on will explore these ideas in more detail and the council say they will have the strategy ready as soon as they can.

Kirkham residents will then be able to see the plan, which could shape the future of Kirkham over the next five to ten years, and give their views on it.

Paul Drinnan, head of regeneration at the council, said: "The work is nearing completion and is a priority.

"Within the next month the document will be finalised.

"It's important to get it right and it is very comprehensive.

"It will then have to be approved by the council then it will be pushed out for public consultation.

"The plan is not something for the council to impose - it's all about the community of Kirkham.

"It's about people being allowed the opportunity to contribute."

Following the public consultation the feedback will be considered before a future plan is decided.

Funding for any schemes that are taken on will need to be sought from external bodies.
