'Keep car parking charges' advice

LYTHAM traders are waiting to hear whether car parking charges will be scrapped after Fylde accountants advised they should remain in place.

Business owners have demanded council bosses act, saying the combination of high parking charges, "overzealous" traffic wardens and the opening of Booths supermarket are killing trade.

Now, in a report, council accountants have advised that because of the funding shortfall caused by the new concessionary bus travel the charges remain.

Fylde Council leader John Coombes said: "The final decision on the car parking charges will be made at a meeting on Monday but we are still in consultation with traders."

Traders said they were disappointed. Sara Lanigan, from Lanigan's fishmongers on Clifton Street, said: "I feel in a way that we have been given false hope by the council that these charges will be reduced or dropped."
