Joseph sees double at Blackpool school

JOSEPH, meet Joseph!

Stars from Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat had better watch their backs – Bispham youngsters are after their jobs.

Craig Chalmers and Antony Hansen, of BBC series Any Dream Will Do fame, took a break from their gruelling schedule at The Grand Theatre – where they are starring as Joseph and Pharaoh – to visit Westcliff Primary School.

It was a dream come true for Year 6 pupils as they performed their own version of the production with the stars of the musical among those in the audience in their school hall.

With beaming smiles, the children performed a selection of songs, including Joseph's Dream, Go, Go, Go Joseph and Song of the King, in front of their idols, who couldn't help tapping their feet and singing along.

Craig, who stars as Joseph, said: "It was fantastic to see the kids perform and see them enjoying it. This is where Joseph started - as a school production."

Kerry Connolly, 11, who took the lead role as Joseph at the Crawford Avenue school, said: "Everyone enjoyed it – especially performing in front of the real stars from the musical."

Following their performance, the pupils had chance to have a chat with the stars before there was a mad scrabble for autographs.

Georgia Daniels, 11, who played the Butler, said: "It was really exciting that they came to the school to see how different we perform it."

And Ryan Baker, also, 11, who played Pharaoh, said he loved performing in front of his older counterpart, but was jealous of his sideburns!

Ryan said: "It was really exciting to perform in front of the real Pharaoh – he had proper side burns! We're going to watch the show at The Grand tonight, so we're looking forward to seeing how different it'll be."

The 'real' Pharaoh, Antony, said he'll have to up his game after seeing Ryan strutting his stuff on stage.

He said: "This is how we both started – at school shows. I think I've got some competition now! I'll have to work harder when they come and see it."

Head teacher Sue Wilson said: "The children have worked really hard and this has just topped it off. We're so pleased Craig and Antony were able to come in. I think this was the children's best performance yet!"

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is at The Grand Theatre until next Saturday, July 19.
