Jail for attempt to strangle girlfriend
A MAN who attacked and tried to strangle his pregnant girlfriend has been jailed for 12 months.
Craig Connell, 28, of Warbreck Drive, North Shore, also tried to smother Kirsty Rawlinson with a pillow and forced her to put tablets in her mouth.
The offences took place at the home the couple shared while Connell was on bail for burglary.
Lancaster Crown Court was told on two occasions Connell and his girlfriend had argued, when she was around two months pregnant with his child, in May.
On the first occasion he had tried to smother her with a pillow and on both occasions – the second happened just two days later – he had tried to strangle her.
He had also forced her to put tablets in her mouth, in what the judge described as possibly "a futile attempt to create an abortion."
Sentencing Connell, Judge Lancaster told him: "As far as strangling her is concerned, at some point when you had your hands around her neck, she must have thought she was going to die.
"On the first occasion when you held a pillow on her face, she was struggling to breathe and she was carrying your child.
"On the second attack, you made her take pills in a futile attempt to create an abortion I expect.
"She must have been horrified."
A psychiatric report did not categorise Connell as a "dangerous, violent offender", but stated he had a tendency to be impulsive, had issues controlling his anger and had an anxiety disorder.
