Illuminations Top gear car for sale

CAR lovers can buy a piece of Blackpool Illuminations and Top Gear history as Richard Hammond's winning switch-on car goes up for sale.

Last August, Top Gear presenters Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May raced from Basel in Switzerland to Blackpool on a single tank of fuel to have the honour of flicking the famous switch and lighting up the Golden Mile.

Richard Hammond beat Jeremy Clarkson's Jaguar in his VW Polo Blue Motion to win the 750 mile race.

Now the car, which has just 5,500 miles on the clock – is for sale on the Auto Trader website with a price ticket of 11,990.

In the advert for the car, Autotrader said: "The Polo is not a powerful car, but it was chosen because it boasts an average fuel economy of 74.3mpg and a tank range of 736 miles."

A 20,000-strong crowd saw the BBC2 presenters complete the race.

Hammond described the gruelling journey as the "single most tense thing I have ever done".

Despite Hammond's victory, it was Top Gear's driver, The Stig, who pulled the switch.
