I'll sue hospital if nothing's done

A WOMAN who claims nurses at a Fylde hospital refused to lift her 15st mother says she is considering legal action.

Ann Chambers, from Marton, says despite having meetings with hospital bosses, she is not happy with the response from Blackpool Victoria Hospital.

The Gazette reported last week how Christine MacPherson, 68, was taken to accident and emergency after a fall.

But Ms Chambers claims she and her sister Joan had to move their mother into an A&E bed because nurses refused in case they hurt their backs.

She was also allegedly not seen to by staff for an hour after admission, was not given her medication and did not have blood cleaned off her face.

The hospital trust said in a statement it offered its apologies to Mrs MacPherson's family and said it was "very concerned" by the complaints. It has started an investigation and admitted the standards of care were at times "totally unacceptable".

But mother-of-two Ms Chambers said she felt it was not the end of the matter. She claims her family has not received a personal apology from the trust.

She said: " I want action to be taken. I believe the nurses involved should be disciplined.

"It's not about just what happened to my mum, it's about what might happen to other people. Her treatment has improved since I complained and she is now at Bispham Rehabilitation Unit, where she will be for the next two or three weeks.

"I'm going to wait to see what the hospital trust does, but if I don't get satisfactory answers or action, I will be contacting a solicitor. No one would want their parent to be treated this way."

But Jenny Farley, associate director of operations for the clinical support division at Blackpool Victoria, said: "The trust has had daily meetings with Mrs MacPherson-Chambers and have passed on our apologies in person on every occasion.

"We have also apologised publicly in the media for the incident.

"We are currently in the middle of a thorough investigation into the reported incident and have agreed with Mrs Chambers to provide a written response with our early findings to her on Monday and will continue to meet with her at her request."
