Hundreds of tributes for 'Mr Wrea Green'

TRIBUTES have been paid to a man described as "Mr Wrea Green". George Dobson, who lived in the village his entire life, was a well known face in the community where he ran a shop for 33 years.

Born at the family home on Mill Lane in 1930, George was raised by parents George Snr and Hilda and had two brothers, Adrian and Bill.

After leaving St Annes school in Westby, he and Adrian went into business together.

They opened a shop in 1961, which acted as a hub of village life for over 30 years before their retirement in 1994.

Adrian said: "One of the golden rules of the shop we made was we tried to speak to everybody that came in and make it as friendly as possible.

"We even won the BBC Shopkeeper of the year in 1979. I don't think we were better than anyone else, we just tried to make people feel welcome."

After retiring George spent his time as an after dinner speaker, entertaining many local societies and church groups with stories of his life, travels and his favourite subject, Wrea Green.

Adrian added: "He did an awful lot of after dinner speaking - we had quite a problem trying to cancel them because he was booked up until 2011.

"He lived for the village, he thought the world of Wrea Green. He a was very well known, outgoing character.

"I received between two and three hundred cards from all over the place saying that they remember him."

George died at the house he had lived his entire life on March 15 at the age of 78.

His funeral was held at St Annes church, Westby, on March 24.
