Hospital attacker escapes jail
A HOSPITAL patient who assaulted two nurses and ran amok on a ward has escaped being sent to jail.
Kevin Thurley punched one nurse in the face and kicked another in the thigh as they tried to treat him for a suspected drug overdose on March 23, 2008.
The following day he again went berserk on a ward, scaring patients and medical staff by throwing cups around and hurling a computer monitor to the floor.
Thurley, 48, of Kincraig Road, Bispham, pleaded guilty to assaulting the nurses, threatening behaviour and causing 253 damage to health authority property.
He was sentenced to 12 months supervision by Blackpool magistrates who awarded no compensation or costs because of Thurley's financial means.
Pam Smith, prosecuting, said Thurley tore out a cannula line which had been put into him to treat him.
As the nurses tried to re-insert it, Thurley kicked one in the thigh and punched another in the face.
Security officers had to be called to subdue him.
