Historic manor's phantom guests

SO many ghostly goings-on have been noted in one Fylde manor house that it has featured in the popular television show, Most Haunted.

Mains Hall, a Grade II listed building in Singleton, is steeped in history, set on an estate with settlements dating back to 1066.

Child ghosts, spirits of priests, cavaliers and former Lords and Ladies have long been seen in the manor house which has served as a farm, bed and breakfast hostelry, hotel, wedding venue, restaurant and a family home.

Proprietors Adele and Roger Yeomans, both 52, live in the manor house with children Beccy, 20, and Josh, 17, while they use The Great Hall at Mains to hold events and functions.

Mrs Yeomans said: "There have been some really strange things".

Paranormal

"When Mains Hall was run as a hotel guests told us lots of anecdotes.

"Friends and family have seen things and we've had lots of paranormal investigators visit too."

Mrs Yeomans regularly sees 'Lily', a lady who stands at the top of the stairs by the Tudor Room.

She said: "It's quite a disconcerting room to sleep in. I'd seen this figure at the top of the stairs and felt like she was called Lily.

"Then a lady who used to live in the manor in the 1940s visited the house and said her mother had always said 'If I could ever go back anywhere I would haunt Mains Hall'. Her mother was called Lily. It was amazing."

The most recent spooky event happened earlier this year when family friends heard a glass smash in a room where no glasses are kept.

Mrs Yeomans said: "When we had a look in the room, there was a broken glass behind a cabinet, but we don't know where it came from."

Other local legends describe wandering monks and priest-like figures in robes in the house, The Great Hall and in the grounds.

Cavaliers are seen regularly – with the best recorded sighting when at least 12 hotel guests saw the ghostly figure of a cavalier in one corner of the room.

Mrs Yeomans has developed a keen interest in the paranormal world and is in the middle of writing a trilogy of books – the Haunted Heritage series by Carnegie publishing – with local paranormal author and former presenter of Most Haunted Jason Karl.
