Head vows zero tolerance on discipline

THE new headteacher of a Blackpool school branded "lawless" and "anarchic" by a former staff member is to take a zero tolerance approach to bad behaviour.

Cherry Ridgway takes over the reigns at Collegiate High School tomorrow and has pledged to take a hard line on discipline.

Harder punishments - including isolated learning - are just part of a raft of measures being aimed at driving up achievement at the school.

Collegiate hit the headlines this week after science teacher David Roy was found to have been unfairly dismissed after he attempted to discipline unruly pupils.

The teacher was cleared of physically assaulting youngsters - one who allegedly disrupted a class by simulating a sex act.

Mr Roy, who was dismissed 18 months ago, claims lessons were disrupted constantly during his years at the school by uncontrollable pupils who "ran wild".

Mrs Ridgway today vowed a fresh start for the school.

She said: "I will not tolerate bad behaviour preventing children from learning at Collegiate.

"From September there will be a tough line on bad behaviour, attendance and any form of disrespect to staff or other pupils.

"New measures are being brought in to add to the progress made here in the last year.

"Our recent Ofsted report said we have areas which need work as a school, but it said behaviour is satisfactory and improving.

"We know we have a way to go, but progress is being made."
