A MUSICIAN whose popularity rocketed after he was backed by Stephen Fry has revealed how he was asked to audition by Britain’s Got Talent.

Millions of people watched Blackpool’s Jon Gomm on YouTube after the actor tweeted a link to it with his one word endorsement ‘wow’.

But internet sensation Jon took to Facebook to criticise popular television show Britain’s Got Talent, claiming producers approached his manager to ask if he wanted to appear on the show.

Jon’s passionate post read: “To all those dreamers and wannabes who may somewhat foolishly believe in the integrity of shows like The X Factor and Britain’s Got Talent: a producer from BGT just called me to ask if Jon Gomm would like to take part in the show.

“I happen to know open auditions took place months ago and there are anxious hopefuls waiting for their phones to ring to see if they’ve made it to the TV stage.”

Mr Gomm explained to his 11,356 fans on the site: “The reason we turned down Britain’s Got Talent is that I can’t imagine anything worse than going on after a dancing chihuahua and then being buzzed off the stage – halfway through a song I’ve poured my soul into – by a celebrity judge, about whose opinion I could not care less.”

A BGT spokesperson said: “This is completely untrue. To ensure we find the best talent Britain has to offer, all avenues are explored.

“Prior to and during the auditions the production researchers are notified of and deal with talent via many routes; these include word of mouth, internet searches, open auditions and events, in line with industry practice.”
