AFTER selling engagement rings to romantic Blackpool couples, their children and now their grandchildren, jewellers Les Pyle and Ken Peaks have decided to retire.

The duo, business partners and owners of Peers Jewellers in Clifton Street, Blackpool, have worked for a combined 81 years in the trade in Blackpool.

Now, they are winding down the store and will retire once their stock is sold.

Les said: “I used to work for Prestons of Bolton in Blackpool, took it over and changed its name.

“The business is up for sale, but that’s not the be all and end all – we’ve been planning our retirement for 18 months now.

“Ken had always planned to retire at 65 so I thought I’m not hanging around – my wife took early retirement so we’ll put our feet up in the sunshine somewhere.”

Ken added: “We’ve been here a long time. There’s been a fair few successful marriages with our rings – we’ve seen their children come in for engagement rings and now we’re seeing their grandchildren too.

“I’m looking forward to spending time with my family now.”

The shop has displayed a rare collection of antique pocket watches in the past – one of only six such displays in the whole of the UK.

And Ken said another highlight was displaying rare opals mined by an Australian man who called at the shop, which brought visitors to the town from across the North West.
