Go-ahead for town centre offices
A £3m cash injection in Blackpool town centre has moved a step closer.
Councillors have approved a planning application to convert the former Harveys furniture store in Abingdon Street into offices for up to 80 workers.
Blackpool Coastal Housing is proposing to move staff from Progress House into the building which has been empty since May 2008 when Harveys moved out and opened a new store on Blackpool Retail Park, Squires Gate Lane.
The council's development control committee agreed the plans after hearing that no objections had been received from surrounding businesses.
Town hall planners said the change of use was "appropriate to a town centre shopping street" because as well as office space on the upper floors, the ground floor will be open to the public. It will be used as a one-stop shop for tenants.
The council is buying the building for 1.2m and expects to spend another 1.8m on refurbishment.
