Gazette ghost-hunting team spend night with the spirits
BLACKPOOL'S Grand Theatre is well known throughout the town for its rich paranormal history.
The amazing success of the theatre's sell-out ghost tours is testament to not only how popular the venue is, but also how much people on the Fylde coast thrill in being frightened.
In fact, according to marketing manager Stephen Mercer, the ghosts at The Grand are nothing to be frightened of.
"People that have come on the tours have all said they don't feel there's any evil presence in the theatre at all,"he told The Gazette.
"The Grand is so full of happy memories from its long history whether its from coming here and enjoying the shows or even being in them. There is certainly no need for people to worry!"
The Grand's most famous ghost is Charlie who is thought to have been a love-lorn audience member from the 1930s.
He is said to have fallen head-over-heels in love with a leading lady in one of the shows.
He bought tickets in the front row of the upper dress circle for every one of her performances.
Unfortunately, when she spurned his romantic advances, Charlie, as legend has it, was so distraught at her rejection he threw himself from the dress circle balcony.
He is now thought to roam the theatre near the place of his death.
The sound of mysterious footsteps and smell of pipe smoke are also regular features at the theatre.
Some believe the hair-raising phenomenon is caused by the ghost of a former Grand manager who still visits from time-to-time to over see the running of the historic building.
