Gas campaigners plan village camp
Cuadrilla Gas site near Singleton
A CAMPAIGN group has announced plans to take over a village field and stage a protest against a controversial shale gas drilling company.
National organisation the Campaign Against Climate Change are hoping to attract members from across the UK to the first ever “Camp Frack”, to be held in Singleton in September.
The three-day event is described as a “symbolic peaceful protest” against Cuadrilla Resources, who are currently drilling for gas at Grange Road in the village.
Camp Frank organiser Phil Thornhill, the campaign’s national co-ordinator, said: “It’s designed as a camp to bring people together and have workshops about the expansion of fracking for shale gas in the UK.
“It’s a peaceful protest against the fracking activities and we’ve chosen Singleton as a symbolic location, that’s where there’s a sign of the drilling.
“The event will manifest our concern as a climate campaign and of all the people who are concerned about climate change about the fact shale gas is the wrong turning to be taking at this point.
“It puts us back at a time when we should be making the necessary conversion to renewable energy.”
Cuadrilla’s Singleton site – where exploratory drilling is taking place – and a second rig at Preese Hall, in Weeton, are the first in the UK to drill for shale gas.
The sites haven’t been without controversy, and hydraulic fracking has been temporarily suspended at the Preese Hall site while links to recent earthquakes are investigated.
Local Green Party leader Philip Mitchell said: “Many people in Singleton have told me they wish they had known more about shale gas and had a chance to oppose it before this development was allowed.
“The Camp will be an opportunity for Fylde residents to come and see why and be prepared to oppose it”
But Singleton Coun Maxine Chew has criticised those behind Camp Frack for worrying local residents.
She said: “There are a few residents who are a bit anxious and this sort of information feeds their anxiety.”
Camp Frack is set to run at an undisclosed location in the village between September 16 and 18.
A spokesman for Cuadrilla said: “Cuadrilla have been very open about their work and have welcomed honest and accurate debate around shale gas and the benefits it can bring to the area. We hope that this event will take an accurate and balanced view of shale gas exploration and not resort to the distortions and inaccuracies that some activists have.”

Sunday, July 24, 2011 at 09:26 AMDont worry Luke the incident that will occur in September will quieten all sceptics, and shut the mouth of those who know nothing about the earth and how much devastation it will take before she fights back. Japan's earthquake comes in the next day or so ( but for different reason ) then in September its Delaware and the Chesapeake Bay area in the Appalachians. Sad but theres a lot more of this kind of stuff to come, maybe then the Americans and all other countries will sit up and look for different methods to fuel their country.

Saturday, July 23, 2011 at 07:11 PMCamp Frack has gained other media attention. As was expected. http:www.guardian.co.ukenvironment2011jul22activists-camp-frack-shale-gas But there seem to be quite a lot of pro fracking comments on the above website which need to be countered with common sense. Some of the comments are totally biased towards capitalist machinations and take no account of the serious threats that lie ahead if this shale gas extraction frenzy is allowed to continue. We MUST continue to make MORE people aware of the consequences of allowing shale gas extraction in their communities and to help them in opposing future plans.

Wednesday, July 20, 2011 at 11:30 PMI hope Coun Maxine Chew is invited to attend and give her opinion. This must be THE MOST PRESSING ISSUE for her right now, the fact the shale gas exploration is occurring under he watch I assume she has checked necessary precautions are being taken to ensure the Cocktail of chemicals used at other fracking sites, injected into the land , are not used here. I also assume that she is aware of the long term likelihood of insurance companies not coveringpaying out for earthquake damage in these areas and this is ensuring cordilla are adeqautely covered in terms of our damage loss to house prices

Wednesday, July 20, 2011 at 05:23 PMHow timely is the date chosen for this protest, they will have plenty of ammunition to back up their claims after the 4th and 5th of September this year, not forgeting the after shock on the 10th. Watch what happens in Delaware and the Chesapeake Bay area of the States, this quake is all down to Shale gas drilling and the demand for supply of fossil fuels. Its all about timing.

Wednesday, July 20, 2011 at 03:57 PMSounds a great idea as long as they buy all their provisions locally like 'greens' always do. No doubt the farmers won't be haymaking till late night like they often do around that time. Sometimes sounds like a racetrack but it's the haymaking machines moving up and down the fields under spotlights.
