Garden is a magic finale for schools' green drive
YOUNG eco-warriors from Red Marsh and Great Arley Schools in Thornton will be celebrating World Environment Day on Friday with a new environmentally friendly play area.
The Magic Garden will provide an exciting green space for young people of all ages and abilities to come together to learn and play.
It has been designed by the youngsters themselves and features include a sensory and eco-garden with wheelchair access, an “upside down” tree and a willow dome with sensory pathways, activity boards and sculptures.
The garden is the first phase of the schools’ Great Outdoors (GO!) Project which aimed to transform an adjacent field into a safe and accessible play space for the school and community.
Months of fundraising included a television appearance on the Big Lottery People’s Millions programme in November 2008, when the project won the hearts of the British public and was awarded 50,000.
Ian Squire, GO! Project coordinator at Red Marsh School, said: “The garden is just the start of the project which will see the area become alive with adventure and the children are absolutely thrilled with their new play area which they have helped to create.
“It will create an imaginative, unique playground where all young people can play together without barriers and develop essential skills for life.”
The opening of the garden is the highlight of a host of green activities this week.
