Gail force drama at Nautical Campus
A TOP Fylde college is in the TV spotlight again as a location for the latest dramatic storyline in Coronation Street.
The training tank at Fleetwood Nautical Campus – recently used by Prince William for helicopter emergency training – is ideal for reproducing waterborne dramatics.
And Corrie is now set to feature nautical campus footage for the second time in three months.
In November there was a canalside confrontation between Tony Gordon and Roy Cropper.
Next week the dramatics will centre on the waters of Windermere where a yachting trip by Gail McIntyre (Helen Worth), and husband Joe (Reece Dinsdale) goes alarmingly wrong.
Much of the footage is on the lake but some is in the controlled conditions of the nautical campus.
Campus head John Matthews said: "We are always happy to welcome films crews to the campus.
"We have had a number of television programmes and documentaries over the years.
"People find they can get some realistic shots with good health and safety.
"We used to get two to three filming sessions a year and now it's up to five or six a year."
Next week, Gail and Joe get to the lakes where Joe hatches a plot to fake his own death to escape his debt problems and allow Gail to cash in his insurance policies.
Eventually Joe sails off and anxious Gail has no idea whether he has gone ahead with his plan.
Gail and her son David make up a story about Joe going away for a few weeks - but the real fate of Joe is left hanging in the balance.
For the water scenes, the campus - part of Blackpool and The Fylde College - has up to six divers in the water which can be coloured to provide extra realism.
In another episode filmed at Fleetwood, there was a water death for arch villain Richard Hillman - another partner of unlucky Gail.
Other programmes which have used the campus include Frost, Hollyoaks and The Royal.
