15 year-old Alice Pell is in with a chance of joining the England ten-pin bowling team in Vienna

THIS Fylde coast teen is hoping not to strike out as she takes on some of the country’s top talent at the England Ten-Pin Bowling trials.

Alice Pell, 15, of Blackpool Road, St Michael’s on Wyre, is already a member of the England Academy and will find out on Sunday if she will make the Under-16s team for the European championships in Austria in May.

The Garstang Community Academy pupil is no newcomer to the lanes having joined the Lakeside Superbowl’s youth team – aged seven.

She is the first player from the Preston bowling alley to represent the national team.

Alice told The Gazette: “I’m quite nervous, I’ve been training with the England squad for several months but we have one last test on Sunday which will include a written exam about lane conditions and oil patterns.

“It will depend on how well I do, I can only do my best and if I don’t get picked this year I can always try again.

Confident

“I’ve been training hard, my scores are consistent – I’d love to go to Vienna but I don’t want to be too confident.”

Alice, who boasts a top score of 216, juggles her five times a week training with her GCSE studies.

But the talented youngster said she loved playing and would not swap her routine for the world.

She added: “It’s such a great event, we get to travel all over the country and meet people while having fun.

“I love the competition element but also the social side and my mum plays for Lancashire so I spend a lot of time with her, which is nice.

“The sport doesn’t get much media coverage, I’d love it to get more and for more people to try it out, I am sure they would enjoy it.”

Mum, Cal, said she was proud of her daughter.

She added: “The main thing is she enjoys it, we can do it together and she has worked so hard to achieve so much.”

If chosen, Alice will be one of six girls and six boys to make up the Under-16s squad.

Lakeside Superbowl is offering free coaching to anyone interested in joining the league and can be reached on (01772) 555080.
