Flossie's Gallic magic at annual folk festival

VIVE La France! A French folk singer whose broad repertoire includes songs made famous by Edith Piaf is coming to Fleetwood.

Flossie Malavialle is among the international acts heading here for the Fylde Folk Festival, which takes place on August 29, 30 and 31.

The thriving festival, which is one of the leading events of its kind in Britain, boasts over 125 different sessions over one amazing weekend of music and dance.

Among the huge cast of performers will be 'Bolton Bullfrog' Bernard Wrigley, ex-Spinner Hughie Jones and Debby McClatchy from the USA.

Flossie will add a touch of Gallic magic to proceedings to the festival's International Concert at the Marine Hall on Saturday August 30 (2.30pm).

The singer came to Britain from her native land to teach French to English schoolchildren in 2000, and while based up in Darlington, decided to continue folk singing as she had done back in France.

Flossie became involved in a Darlington folk club ... and it changed her life.

When she went back to France after her exchange was over, she missed the life she had in England so much, she came back again.

And her involvement in music over here has led to her releasing six albums, including two which paid tribute to two giants of French song – 'Flossie sings Piaf' (May 2003) and 'Flossie sings Brel' in November 2007.

But there is more to Flossie than tribute performances to the French greats of the past – her repertoire includes all sorts of different music genres. Her songs include famous numbers, including Allan Taylor's 'Roll on the day', Kieran Halpin's 'Making up the miles', Colum Sands' 'The child who asks why', Starrett and Laird's 'John Condon'.

The Fylde Folk Festival includes events at the Marine Hall, the North Euston Hotel and The Steamer pub, and there also pre-festival events at Thornton's Marsh Mill and on Fleetwood's hertiage trawler, Jacinta.

Further details of the festival can be obtained at the festival office on (012530 872317 or (01253) 852832.
