Floral tributes to tragic dad

"DAD...we hope you have a great life in heaven."

This is the heartbreaking message left by three young children whose father died after a fight on the streets of Fleetwood.

Gerard Cavanagh's devastated family and friends have left many floral tributes at the spot where police say the father-of-three was murdered.

The most heartfelt came from his three children, Jack, 10, Bobby, three, and Elizabeth two.

It reads: "To Dad with all our love. Wishing you have a great life in heaven."

Mr Cavanagh, a 31-year-old engineering student, of Southfleet Avenue, Fleetwood, died after suffering a ruptured artery at the base of his skull.

It is alleged the fatal injury was caused in a fight outside the La Luna takeaway on Lord Street just after 3.30am on New Year's Day.

Mr Cavanagh - a former pupil of Cardinal Allen RC High School - was found unconscious by a passing police patrol.

Despite desperate efforts to save him by both police and paramedics, he died before he reached hospital.

Mr Cavanagh's wife Charlene said: "I loved him so much. There are so many things I would like to say but I can't."

She added: "He was so well liked by everyone, the whole of Fleetwood is going to be devastated."

Other floral tributes left outside the takeaway read: "Gerry, you'll never walk alone"; "You will be sadly missed Jez. You was a son, husband and a dad in a million and a good friend to us all."

Another said: " Love you mate"; "You will always be remembered in all our hearts, and "You will live on within your children."

Michael Twiss, 19, of Broadway, Fleetwood, appeared in court on Saturday charged with murder.

The court was told the defendant was a student at the University of Central Lancashire.

Twiss spoke only to confirm his name and address during the hearing.

He was remanded in custody until March 26 when the case will be heard at Preston Crown Court.

Meanwhile, a 17-year-old girl, who cannot be named due to her age, has been charged with assault.

She has been bailed to appear before Fleetwood magistrates court on January 13.
